Just three short news items today:
(1) The Planet Ultramarathon website has an interesting post about solo running and the logistics of keeping records of those feats. After my Run to London last year my main thought would be that some people do those kind of things just for fun. They may be interested in the record aspect of it but do not want to get tied down with all the red tape and/or paperwork and/or other requirements that may be needed to absolutely prove they did what they claim to have done.
It is a good idea to have a body recognising these achievements though.
(2) The German website (DUV) has been uploading lots of ultra race results lately. Some of them going back to the 1970's. This website is proving to be a great repository of results and provides a brilliant statistical service for the last six years over a wide range of distances and times. Well done to Jurgen, Bertram and Andreas.
Good to see Alan Young at number thirteen in the British 24 hour rankings for 2010.
(3) William Sichel has uploaded loads of podcasts, many of which were filmed with the Athens 1000 mile race in mind. They contain an amazing amount of information and show just how meticulous ultra runners have to be with their preparation and racing. Amazing stuff which is well worth a look.

A new idea for a competition
Training is progressing well. This morning I ran over 18 miles in under 2 hours 30 and it felt easy. Tomorrow will be 18 miles where each mile will be 5 to 10 seconds quicker than the previous mile. For this I'll use the mile points on the [notoriously hilly] Otley 10.
Found an interesting item this morning on the Planet Ultramarathon website. It is a competition that someone in America has organised and the idea is that, on 1 Nov 2008 the competitors run a minimum of one mile. On 2 Nov 2008 they run a minimum of 2 miles, 3 miles on 3 Nov, 4 miles on 4 Nov, etc, etc. All proceeds will be going to charity.
Full details can be found here. One interesting thing to note is that in the first week runners will cover at least 28 miles, with 77 being covered in the second week, 126 in the third and 175 in the fourth week. Each week increasing by 49 miles.
Are you up for the challenge ?

Good news for ultra running
Just found this on the Planet Ultra Marathon website:
100km and 24hr Commonwealth Championship - 2009
The inaugural Commonwealth championships for 100km and 24 hour will take place in Cumbria, England in September 2009. Upon successful completion, the events should become fixtures within the Commonwealth games structure and eventually the Olympics. Congratulations to the IAU and to Norman Wilson in particular for this major development.
For more details (and more news about other ultras) see http://www.planetultramarathon.wordpress.com
Also good news (and not so good) for William Sichel. He has won the Hamm 6 day race in Germany with a new pb of 857.07km. [The second placed runner completed 580.18km].
Unfortunately he just missed his longed for Scottish record which is 878.7km by George Cameron - set in 1882 !!!!
Well done to William ...

Today was my first run this year where I didn't use ice before or after. Only 5.25 miles but I feel OK ... and so does my achilles.
Just looked at the results of the Crawley 12 hr race (I was going to do this before injury struck, remember). John Pares won with just over 130k but I also notice that Derek Martin finished in third with over 102k - well done to them. It seems to me that I would have finished much closer to John than I have on the previous occasions we've raced - maybe he had a bad run, I've no idea - but I'd have been looking for something over 125k. Full results can be found at http://ultrarunner.co.uk/
Yesterday on my local BBC news program I was interested in their piece about the Three Peaks Race - 24 mile fell race in the Yorkshire Dales taking in Whernside, Pen Y Ghent and Ingleborough. They made it seem as if it was the most difficult race in Yorkshire !!! All us ultra runners know that it isn't (it's merely the race with the best scenery) and more difficult races include Fellsman (61 miles from Ingleton to Grassington), Round Rotherham 50 and Hull 24hr track race. I sent an email to the news program with this information and hopefully we'll get some publicity for ultra races ... or maybe not !!!
This morning I looked at Phil Essam's website (http://planetultramarathon.wordpress.com/) and noticed that he is looking for a helper to post information while he is 'going part time' later this year ... could I do that ? Need to think about whether I can spare the time ...
Also noticed on that website that Yiannis Kouros has won the Ciserano 24 hr race (Italy) with 261k ... this took place on 20 April, just three weeks after he won the Brno 48 hr race with over 400k - amazing recovery.
If anyone comes across any good decaf coffee please let me know - thanks.

Thought of the day
A few things occurred to me over the weekend:
- The IAU have announced the major competitions for 2008 but no European 24 hr Championships - obviously a blip and I can only hope it returns next year (if someone can be found to organise it). Not that UKA would send a team ...
- According to the Planet Ultramarathon world rankings for 2007 my distance in winning the Hull race - 205.028km - comes in at number 167 (UK number 7). Taking everyone's second best performance, my distance in London - 202.685km - comes in at number 33 (UK number 2). Well pleased with this.
- Mick Jeffrey, Otley AC, has asked for suitable articles to be sent to him for February's newsletter (it's his turn to be editor). Would something by Phil Essam or Andy Milroy be suitable?
- Caught 'Songs Of Praise' on BBCTV last night. The program was from the Orkneys but why no mention or sight of William Sichel?
