As race day approaches I've found a few interesting snippets of information ...
American ultra runner (and fellow ex-cancer patient) has written a fantastic preview of the race on his blog. Unfortunately he won't be in Katowice this year but I had the pleasure of spending some time with him at the last World Championships in Brive.
The start list has now been confirmed and is available on the IAU website. The most interesting name on the list is one Yiannis Kouros. I don't think he's in the kind of form to win the race but one thought stuck me ... will it be the first time he's not finished first in a 24 hr race ?
Also missing this year will be Amy Palmiero-Winters. An amazing woman who runs with a prosthetic leg after being involved in a motorcycle accident back in the mid 1990s. Very close to 200 km (124 miles) in Brive but still about 15 km (9 miles) below her best ... truly inspirational. If she can run 24 hrs there's nothing to stop you ...
The official race website is http://www.run24.eu/en,news.html and it looks as if there may be live coverage. The IAU website will also have regular updates, interviews and other information.
I'm sure many press releases have gone out over the past few days from runners, associations, sponsors and others. One source of internet news local to Yorkshire which I've recently found is The Yorkshire Times. An excellent site for anyone born and bred in God's own county.

news update
Still very cold outside. Not running today but yesterday I still needed a hat and three pairs of gloves!!!! There hasn't been any snow for a week or so now but the average temperature on my training runs has still been around zero Celsius (32 Fahrenheit).
Mike Blamires recently picked up on the item from my last post about the Melbourne to Sydney race of 1985. His recent post compares the nutrition strategy of Yiannis Kouros in that race to my nutrition strategy during the Run To London. Mike does know a bit about that as he was one of my helpers last May - he ran with me for 25 miles or so beginning at about 4.30am on the Sunday morning. One thing he later said will always stay with me: "I never thought I'd see a man run 200km in 24 hours and yet look so fresh."
Thanks Mike ... without your help I couldn't have raised well over £2000.
A few days into the future now and on Friday there's the Annual Presentation Evening of my club - Otley AC. The Runner Of The Year competition was won by Tom Hannah and the Handicap competition by Billy Rayner. I didn't finish in the top three in either of those competitions but I do think that the rules of the Runner Of The Year competition make it very difficult, if not impossible, for an ultra distance runner to win.
Although I doubt I'll be collecting any trophies this year it's still an enjoyable evening with lots of food, drink and memories of 2009 with the good company of over 50 members of Otley AC. Unfortunately Fay will be absent this year, for the first time, she has another important meeting to attend instead.
Speaking of Fay ... she fell badly at lunchtime today and came home with torn trousers, a cut and badly bruised knee and a swollen hand.
On a final note all the best to William Sichel who's taking part in the Espoo indoor 24hr race in Helsinki at the weekend. He's using it as part of his build up to the 1000 mile race in Athens in March. I believe Paul Hart is also running in Helsinki.

just for fun ...
Just found this on Multidays.com - a short and simple animation ... but it's very good.
Nike - Onwards by James Jarvis
And this website - ultramarathonrunning.com - is quickly building a repository of races, results, articles, etc. One of the more recent articles is entitled Energy Balance in Ultramarathon Running and is a study of Yiannis Kouros' Sydney to Melbourne race in 1985. A very interesting read it is too ...

Today was my first run this year where I didn't use ice before or after. Only 5.25 miles but I feel OK ... and so does my achilles.
Just looked at the results of the Crawley 12 hr race (I was going to do this before injury struck, remember). John Pares won with just over 130k but I also notice that Derek Martin finished in third with over 102k - well done to them. It seems to me that I would have finished much closer to John than I have on the previous occasions we've raced - maybe he had a bad run, I've no idea - but I'd have been looking for something over 125k. Full results can be found at http://ultrarunner.co.uk/
Yesterday on my local BBC news program I was interested in their piece about the Three Peaks Race - 24 mile fell race in the Yorkshire Dales taking in Whernside, Pen Y Ghent and Ingleborough. They made it seem as if it was the most difficult race in Yorkshire !!! All us ultra runners know that it isn't (it's merely the race with the best scenery) and more difficult races include Fellsman (61 miles from Ingleton to Grassington), Round Rotherham 50 and Hull 24hr track race. I sent an email to the news program with this information and hopefully we'll get some publicity for ultra races ... or maybe not !!!
This morning I looked at Phil Essam's website (http://planetultramarathon.wordpress.com/) and noticed that he is looking for a helper to post information while he is 'going part time' later this year ... could I do that ? Need to think about whether I can spare the time ...
Also noticed on that website that Yiannis Kouros has won the Ciserano 24 hr race (Italy) with 261k ... this took place on 20 April, just three weeks after he won the Brno 48 hr race with over 400k - amazing recovery.
If anyone comes across any good decaf coffee please let me know - thanks.
