I know I've got a big event going on this weekend - see this page for details - but other ultra runners I know are also racing this weekend and I wish them all the best in their endeavours.
Sharon Gayter is in Surgeres doing the 48 hour race and Pam Storey & Gil John are taking part in the Wessex 100 (LDWA event).
I've also updated the media page with a new newspaper article.

Good News & Bad News
Monday - 19+ miles in 2h 45
Tuesday - 19+ miles in 2h 22
Wednesday - (am) 45 mins on bike ... (pm) 5k race in 19:07 then run 5 miles home
Thursday - right ankle feels sprained
Right, lets get the bad news out of the way first. Woke up this morning and struggled to get myself downstairs, my ankle felt sprained and swollen. Plenty of ice and ibuprofen later it's obvious that my ankle is slowly getting better. I had always planned to do no running today - so that's not bad then !!. Tomorrow ... decide later.
Good news. Yesterday's race provided me with an 'age graded pb' of 17:30 beating the 17:32 (17:53 actual time) I ran in Bradford in Nov 1998. It can be seen at the top of this post that I'm not exactly doing much 5k training [in fact, I hope, I'm training for the opposite end of the running spectrum].
I've noticed recently that Sharon Gayter (fantastic ultra runner, beat me in London last October) has been regularly running the Hyde Park 5k time trials in Leeds, recording 21 to 22 mins. So I'm quite pleased with my 19:07 then.
All the best to her and William Sichel in the Surgeres 48 hr race in France this weekend.

Serious Competition
Just been looking at William Sichel's website and he's just posted his races for this year. They include the Hull 24 hr race in July ... the one I'm aiming for. After an email conversation with him last summer I guess his target would be about 247k or 153 miles (the UK age group record [M50]).
William was UK number 5 last year whereas I was a lowly number 7. He's been running ultras for a long time now and is definitely one to watch as his achievements are fantastic. They can be seen on his website http://www.williamsichel.co.uk/
I also noticed that he plans to run the Surgeres 48hr race in mid May. This will give him only 8 weeks recovery before Hull !!
Will this give me an extra incentive to maintain my new found professionalism regarding diet, time management and willingness to do the work needed to succeed - of course it has.
Need to look at last year's training to see what can be improved and how. One thing's for sure though, I think I'll stick with the cycling but need to find a way of incorporating it properly when running commences.
